Spatial variations in cycling dissonance: The case of commuting in Greater Brisbane

In car orientated nations, most commuters living close to work typically do not commute by bicycle. Empirical scholarship seeking delineate the various barriers cycling-to-work present a set of somewhat inconsistent findings. This study seeks demystify this lack clarity introducing concept “cycling dissonance”—the mismatch between cycling potential and reality—and place an empirical focus on non-cycling who travel distance work, deemed “cyclable.” By dissonance embedded within spatial modeling approach, relationship natural built environment is captured whilst controlling for socio-demographic characteristics commuters. Our findings reveal important variations highlighting working in areas with hillier terrains, sparser populations lower employment densities, or terrains higher land-use mixes tend have levels dissonance. drawing these results together, we develop new policy tool that spatially delineates place-based factors matter doing so provide evidence base capacity better target place-specific cycling-supportive policy.
